ABOUT NIKKI

Hi, I'm
Nikki Bruno.

I'm a college admissions consultant and executive function coach based in Annapolis. I founded Student Coaching Services in 2015 and have been doing this work - in various forms - for over a decade.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Environmental scientist.
Science teacher.
Now a consultant & coach.

I started my career trajectory as a marine scientist and then worked as a science teacher at a maritime academy. Working with students was the part I kept coming back to - not just the content, but the whole picture: how they managed their time, how they thought about their future, what got in the way when they were clearly capable of more. The skills that actually move the needle for students aren't usually the ones being taught in school. So I started teaching those instead, and college advising was the natural next step - that's when I trained through IECA.

CREDENTIALS

I've been quoted in the New York Times and College Confidential on college admissions, featured on NBC, and have presented seminars on college prep and study skills for years. I'm an active NACAC and IECA member; while this profession has no formal degrees or licensing, maintaining membership in these organizations is key to the quality of my work. I take the professional side seriously, but I also believe families deserve a clearer picture of how this process actually works - and I'm happy to be that person.

SAILING

I'm an internationally competitive sailor, but I never set foot on a sailboat until my freshman year at the University of Miami where I walked on to the team. Now, I sail 100+ days a year in various racing classes - including offshore deliveries, so there's a decent chance you'll meet with me while I'm loaded up on Starlink somewhere in the Atlantic.

I've competed professionally and have coached junior sailing for years, but working with student sailors as a college consultant is one of my favorite parts of this work. I understand the athletic identity piece, the recruiting process, the way the sport shapes how a kid sees themselves - and I understand the community. Sailing is a small world with a long memory.

HOW I WORK

I keep a small client load on purpose, so every student gets real attention.

My clients tend to be families who want a genuine thought partner - someone invested in the outcome. I believe in starting early and focusing on the student as a whole person, not just an applicant. Achievement and wellbeing aren't in conflict. The students who do best in this process are the ones who actually know themselves - that's what we build toward.
