4 Degrees for People Interested in IT

Working in IT is lucrative and rewarding, especially if you work in management information systems. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), management positions for information systems made a median annual salary of $139,220 in 2017. On top of that, BLS projects that the outlook for this career is expected to grow faster than any other occupation--12 percent by 2026.

If you want to get involved in IT, you will need a degree that relates to the field. Several degrees will greatly improve your chances of getting employed in IT. We've listed four below for you to consider.

Information Technology

Yes, this is the name of the industry, but it is also the name of a degree that you can get. This degree covers an extensive area of information technology. It is especially useful if you plan to go into management because you may also study business courses in this major.

Cyber Security

With all these information systems out there, security is a huge concern. In 2016, 90 percent of companies were hacked in some way. As the IT sector continues to grow, so will the cybersecurity sector so having a degree in this area can take you a long way.

Computer Science

Many people often try to lump computer science and IT into the same category, but they are slightly different from each other. You can look at computer science as the creation of programs and look at IT as the use of the created programs. Either way you put it, computer science is a great degree that could get you involved in IT. After all, if you know how to make it, you'll know how to use it.

Health Information Systems

As the name suggests, this degree is specifically for the health care system. While it technically falls under the healthcare industry rather than IT, it is basically an information technology-based degree. As the demand for health care rises, so will the demand for people skilled in health information systems.

Information technology is an industry that is growing at an exponential rate. Because it is growing at such an exponential rate, the industry needs a lot of qualified people. Majoring in one of the degrees above can help you become a success in the IT field. If you’re still undecided and might be interested in what we’ve talked about before, then talk to your academic counselor and see what’s going to be best for you!
